Under the Big Sky

“Under the Big Sky” is a TV/web series featuring notable contemporary Montanans.  It was first created in the late 1990’s as a reoccurring news segment for the Montana Television Network, then discontinued after a number of years.  In 2015, the decision was made to bring back a reimagined version of the show. Executive Producer Shawn Newton and myself set out to establish a distinguished look and feel for the series – the goal for the design was to convey a sense of Montana that’s respectful of the traditional western themes while embracing some modern chic.

Guerrilla Waltz

A rebellious music and video cocktail. Inspired by the French website La Blogothéque’s “Take Away Shows,” Guerrilla Waltz was a series that recorded live impromptu music performances in public spaces. The intention of the branding was to blend elegance with punk rock sensibilities. The edges are rough; no lighting, no professional sound mix, just the musicians and videographers combining their talents to create a raw artistic experience.

UnFiasco Productions

The concept behind UnFiasco’s brand was a playful take on the theater masks or comedy/tragedy masks. UnFiasco was a group of filmmakers who produced comedy sketches and mashup videos. The graffiti style logo with brown paper bags were a fun way to translate the bash, low budget tone.

The Delicate Nature

Branding for a feature length film. This was my senior thesis project for the school of design at Montana State. The tone was inspired by promotion materials for Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight.” The posters and DVD cover feature visceral, ominous imagery, hinting at key elements of the story; the typeface evokes a nightmare storybook quality, a nod to the toxic small town gossip depicted in the film.
